The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is an organizational department of the Government of Bangladesh . The organization was set up by the Government of Bangladesh to provide technical development plans and assistance in the construction of buildings for various organizations under local government .

কৃষি ও অকৃষি উৎপাদন বৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে স্থানীয় অবকাঠামো উন্নয়ন এবং ব্যবস্থাপনা; কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টি; আর্থ-সামাজিক উন্নয়ন; স্থানীয় সরকার শক্তিশালীকরণ; দারিদ্র্য দূরীকরণ এবং স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তনে প্রভাবক হিসেবে কাজ করা।
এলজিইডি’র ভিশন:
এলজিইডি পেশাগতভাবে যোগ্য, দক্ষ এবং কার্যকর সরকারি সংস্থা হিসেবে নিম্নবর্ণিত আন্তঃসম্পর্কিত পরিপূরক কার্যক্রম সম্পাদনে অবদান রাখবে:
পরিবেশগত ও সামাজিক সুরক্ষার বিষয়সমূহ যথাযথ গুরুত্ব দিয়ে উন্নয়নের সকল পর্যায়ে স্থানীয় সরকার এবং স্থানীয় উপকারভোগীদের অংশগ্রহণ নিশ্চিত করে পরিবহন, বাজার এবং ক্ষুদ্রাকার পানিসম্পদ বিষয়ক অবকাঠামোসমূহের উন্নয়ন, রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ ও সার্বিক ব্যবস্থাপনা; এবং
স্থানীয় সরকার প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহকে শক্তিশালী করতে প্রয়োজনীয় প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক ও কারিগরি সহায়তা এবং স্থানীয় উপকারভোগী ও কমিউনিটিকে সহযোগিতা প্রদান।
The Department of Local Government Engineering was set up by the Government of Bangladesh for technical development planning and assistance in the construction of buildings for various organizations under the Local Government. This organization takes various measures including planning for construction of various bridges, culverts, roads etc. Rural development is very important for achieving economic progress of Bangladesh. The following four Comilla model programs for rural development were adopted in the early sixties of the nineteenth century, including:
- Thana Training and Development Center
- Rural Rehabilitation Program
- Thana Irrigation Program
- Two-tier cooperative
The implementation of rural development programs included in the Comilla model was the main basis for the development of rural infrastructure. Later in the seventies, an engineering cell was formed under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives to implement this program, which was transformed into the ‘Works Program Wing’ in 1982 under the Development Budget. In October 1974, the Works Program Wing was reorganized as the Local Government Engineering Bureau (LGEB) under the Revenue Budget. In August 1992, LGEB was promoted to Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Out of the four programs under the Comilla model, LGED is implementing the remaining three programs apart from the two-tier cooperative program. These activities include development of rural infrastructure, development of small scale water resources and urban development. These are implemented under three sectors. LGED is a decentralized organization with about ninety-eight percent of its manpower working in the field.
